Commission on Ownership now underway, notions of “ownership” are suddenly everywhere. To some, the focus on shareholder value is partially culpable for the financial crisis: they say a rival model of stakeholding offers better prospects for fairness and sustainability in business. Others want to use ownership to make public services more human in scale and more enterprising in practice. Some claim share ownership works to align the interests of workers and an organisation, delivering productivity gains and engagement. And others say ownership alone won’t work: ownership plus decision-making power makes the difference.
